I'm went to Oaxaca in July 2011 courtesy of the NEH to study the arrival of the Spanish from the indigenous point-of-view. I'm now plotting to return and continue researching GM corn and colonial architecture in 2013.

NEH Unit on GMO corn
As Ron and Stephanie predicted, I've continued to work on my curriculum unit, finessing certain points, incorporating different methods of delivery (Glogster, Prezi, Screencast-O-Matic and Voice Thread), and adding audio and visual components like Lila Downs's "Palomo del Comalito" and the above cartoon. After my experience sharing my unit with a teacher of Advanced Placement Biology -- who then proceeded to turn my material into a set of multiple-choice questions -- I'm feeling better about working on it and sharing it again, this time with someone who teaches ELL's. We'll see!

Oaxaca nostalgia
Can't wait to go back. Maybe summer of 2013? My sister would love it, and there are still tons of things to see.
Is there a third Oaxacan adventure in my future?
In the meantime, I hope Oaxaca -- both the city and the surrounding regions -- doesn't suffer too much from the rainfall that Carlotta is bringing in her wake. Mexico, like New Orleans, spends much of the warm-weather months on pins and needles hoping that year's storms will pass them by.
